Dear Shaun,
As one of the "immigrants" who make regular weekly journeys to The White Hart at Margaretting Tye, and have done for the past ten years, I feel I must respond to David Sherman's comments regarding my "local".
Pastel green decor and fake beams not in keeping with a traditional
country pub? Is that really important? Excellent beer, good quality
food with a varied specials menu and a friendly atmosphere. Sounds like
a traditional country pub to me.
The conservatory was not part of last years refurbishment, as his
report appears to suggest, but put in place by the present landlords
predecessor, to create a smoke free area more suitable for children and
as a private function room. Many pubs have them for the same reason.
His likening it to an "ill-fitting sausage in an ice-cream", though
meant to be humourous, is as fuuny as a deflated balloon. I am unable
to even imagine such a thing, but then I do not patronise the greasy
spoons he obviously does.
It simply is'nt true that no-one speaks to others outside their group.
As David Sherman does not appear to be a regular visitor to The White
Hart he cannot possibly be aware of this.
The old adage that everyone is entitled to their own opinion is, of course, true, but not when it is based on ignorance.
Bob Harris, Chelmsford.
