RutherfordDue to my skill as a documentary film maker, or possibly my skill to borrow camera equipment at short notice, I was carefully selected to film a stand-up comedy workshop at a large call centre in Romford.

Who am I and what do I do?

The RobAs an avid reader of both The Edge magazine and this column, you've no doubt waited eagerly all month, with baited breath, for this particular edition of the mag so you can rapidly flick past all the other various relevant local content and photo's, desperate to peruse Rob’s column.

OK, so perhaps you've never read my column before? Perhaps you've never read The Edge before? Perhaps you count yourself as an avid reader of The Edge when you really just turn to the jokes page, after scouring the magazine for pictures of nice breasts, before finally discarding the publication in a toilet cubicle somewhere. That's OK.  Don't feel bad. We've all read FHM at some point or other too.  None of us are proud. We all need laughs and breasts.  But what's important is that you're taking the time, and trouble, to read this now. For that I thank you, and happily forgive any lack of prior knowledge of who I am or what I normally write about.

Pants - a brief history

Robert RutherfoodOne of the things that most of us have in common is that, as a general rule, we will all wear some kind of underwear either as a part of our daily routine, for recreational purposes, for enticement, for excitement, or to perform some function of our lives.

Jeans

Robert RutherfordWhy do jeans have buttons, not zips?

I have finally reached the point where every single pair of jeans I own has a button-fly. Buttons are not my preference for jeans. I'd much prefer to have a practical zip-fly and always look for zip-flies, but such an item as reasonably styled jeans that fit me which have a zip-fly have seemingly become extinct.

Freelance

Mr Rutherford I presumeFreelance is a term originally coined to describe a medieval mercenary. A Knight without loyalty to a particular King was considered ‘free’ and if they were happy to provide their services or ‘lance’ for payment, they were referred to as free-lance.  Although this is the origin of the word, the term was first used retrospectively in the 19th century and the meaning has continued to be developed to describe anyone devoid of loyalty to a particular organisation who is willing to work for anyone who will pay them. Following this progression, modern day freelancing tends to involve more billing than killing, more train rides than crusades, and more email than chain-mail. That aside, the mercenary attitude has remained true throughout, even if it's not quite so lethal these days.

Packaging Psychosis

Mr Rutherford I presumeAs a child, I was fortunate enough to visit The Gambia in West Africa where, amongst many unforgettable sights, I will always remember the local market I visited. In the ravaging African heat, amongst all the chaos of what was mainly a clothes and  fabric market, certain traders displayed slabs of what looked like flies. As I looked on, curiously wondering why anyone would want to buy a slab of flies, I saw a local fellow approach one trader and start to barter over the price of a selected slab of flies that obviously appealed to him,for some obscure reason. When the price was agreed, the trader picked up the slab and ferociously slapped it on a table so that all the flies buzzed off.

Getting Licked by a Giraffe in Norfolk

GiraffeHaving just returned from a short break in Great Yarmouth, I find that I have very mixed feelings about the place. I would have written that the town immediately felt like travelling back in time to an unpleasant part of the 1980's, but it felt far more like a particularly unpleasant part of the 1980's had been transported forward in time to the present date, whilst similarly being tainted by everything I've hated over the past twenty years on its journey. Somehow though, I just can't find it within me to hate the place as I had such a good time while I was up there.

What is Art?

Written by Robert Rutherford
Monday, 22 September 2008
What is Art?One of the many attempts at a dictionary definition of art is, ‘Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter or counteract the work of nature’. However, even after many thousands of years of art being produced, there still seems to be no completely agreed description of what qualifies and what doesn't. Is the word ‘art’ really such a subjective term that it can relate to just about anything at all? A lot of experts agree that art cannot have a practical function; if it does, it's really just good design.

Mayor Wets Himself at local company opening party

I was fortunate enough to be amongst the very elite of Chelmsford society when I was recently chosen to attend the opening bash held by Creation Studios who have recently relocated to Moulsham Street.

Creation Studios do a lot of professional 3D animation and CGI work and, as I'm a student film maker, they were obviously keen to invite me along.

Shoes Off

I recently went to a party round someone's house that I had never been to before. I didn't know them, or anyone else there, so if you're wondering how I came to be invited, it's because the person I was with was related to these people, although that’s all irrelevant.
