Party in the Street
Moulsham Street is having a party on Saturday 26th Nov. ‘The Party’ is replacing the old Moulsham Street Parade, but of course there will still be the traditional Christmas Lighting Up ceremony at 4.45pm to officially celebrate the re-opening of Chelmsford’s most famous street. Made up primarily of independent retailers, the long awaited refurbishment of Moulsham Street was originally planned when times were good. However, the works eventually took place in the middle of the worst recession witnessed in our lifetime.
Increased rates, fuel prices, food costs and energy bills, not to mention a down- turn in consumer spending, have all meant that the past few months for a street that relies heavily on its access routes has been extremely difficult for many shopkeepers who have experienced more than their fair share of upset and turmoil as the utility companies dug up and re-dug up the brand new foot- path. Moulsham Street reopening on 17th October was a huge relief to all, and even though the improvements needed doing, the benefits won’t properly be felt until ’The Street’ has been deep cleaned and sealed. However, it will definitely take a while for some of the pain of the past few months to fade away.
“I have only been part of ‘The Street’ for the past 16 months, but already I feel part of a ‘family’,” says new MTA chairman Jayne Gayer. “It’s a unique place, not just because of the eclectic range of shops, salons, professional services, bars, restaurants, cafes and take-away outlets, but because of the service customers get from Moulsham Street business owners, which is sadly something you rarely find in High Street’s anymore. The people of Moulsham Street genuinely care because their livelihoods depend on the success of their respective businesses, and it’s that uniqueness that the traders of Moulsham Street want the whole town of Chelmsford to experience for themselves, hence our Street Party. We want people to visit the street, stay in the street and, most of all, enjoy all Moulsham Street has to offer. We hope our Street Party is the ideal way to showcase just what Moulsham Street and its people are all about.”
There will be an array of stall holders from all over Essex selling a wide range of products and crafts, as well as a fun- fair for the kids, with entertainment provided by Chelmsford Radio, and Panic Magazine helping with the sourcing of local bands to help things go along with a swing.
?“It’s going to be a great day for all the family,” beams Jayne, “culminating with the lights being switched on at 4.45pm. So please do step away from the High Street and experience a truly original street in it’s own right.”
